While we were getting ready for day care this morning, they both complained about how Agri-business is suffocating the independent farmer, particularly those interested in organic or pesticide-free produce. They were also saying stuff about ethanol subsidies and the myth of the estate tax, but as a lifelong city-dweller, I had no idea what they were talking about...

Grampa Jim found a John Deere riding tractor at the church rummage sale. The boys had good fun plowing leaves and filling the front-end loader.

It is awfully early for Sam and Caleb to learn the harsh realities of agriculture in our modern society. Tell them not to despair, the earlier that they understand the current agrarian business model. The better prepared for developing niche markets those factory farms, Cargill, and ADM fail to service.
Tell them to look to the current US Senator from Montana, John Tester. John has been a successful organic farmer for decades now, he has remained profitable by staying under the radar of agribusiness, and savvy business skills.
I love the overalls. Their wardrobes are always so toy-appropriate!
